In late August 2019, Kevin experienced a life-altering moment when he suffered a complete spinal cord injury following a fall during the 2019 Grand Prix at the Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY, United States. In early September, Kevin underwent a critical surgery to stabilize the vertebrae in his neck. By mid-October of that same year, he had made significant progress, transitioning from relying on a ventilator for breathing to facing the challenge of being paralyzed from the neck down. Remarkably, just two months later, Kevin began teaching from his wheelchair. Today, he remains on a determined journey, actively participating in experimental stem cell therapy, holding onto the hope of regaining movement below the neck.

This life-altering event marked the inception of the Kevin Babington Foundation, which was established in 2019. Kevin Babington Foundation (KBF) has been created to provide funding and support for Equestrian Show Jumping Athletes who sustain spinal injuries. In addition to providing financial assistance the foundation will also strive to educate riders, trainers and show organizers about the most current safety measures designed to reduce the risk of serious injuries which can occur while riding.

A Unified Support Network

During the conversation, Jonathon highlights the invaluable role played by the Kevin Babington Foundation, which helped coordinate his care and recovery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and the Schepens Institute, one of the top medical facilities in the world for complex neuro and spinal rehabilitation.

Crucial to that process was the tireless effort and deep network of Victoria McCullough, a long-time advocate for equine and human health in the sport.

“It was an honor to assist in Jonathon’s recovery,” said Victoria McCullough. “Through my years working closely with Massachusetts Eye and Ear and the Schepens Institute, I knew we had access to a world-class team that could give him a real path forward. It’s not just about helping one rider — it’s about building the kind of support system this sport desperately needs.”

The Kevin Babington Foundation (KBF) today shares a mid-year snapshot of impact—both in the ring and across the equestrian community—as riders, owners, sponsors, and volunteers continue to rally around KBF’s mission of rider safety, rehabilitation, and education. This update celebrates what your support has made possible and offers clear ways to get involved.

This year’s highlights

Benefit classes that resonated. From emotional showcase moments to last-to-go thrillers, KBF-supported classes—headlined by the Babington Benefit Classic presented by Rood & Riddle—brought riders, owners, sponsors, and fans together around a shared purpose.
Hands-on support for athletes. KBF coordinated rehabilitation resources, facilitated direct assistance where appropriate, and helped athletes navigate critical steps on the road to recovery.
Safety first, every day. The Foundation championed education and equipment awareness, engaging riders, trainers, and show organizers in practical conversations that translate to safer barns and better outcomes in the ring.
Community, connected. Through partnerships with shows, sponsors, and volunteers, KBF amplified a culture of care—turning individual acts of generosity into tangible progress for riders.
Seaver partnership announced. Seaver was welcomed as the Official Safety Vest of the Kevin Babington Foundation, elevating awareness around protective equipment and reinforcing our commitment to rider safety.

Agero CSI 3* Grand Prix Tests Nerves and Precision; Charlotte Jacobs Clinches Sunday Showdown

Sunday’s Agero CSI 3* Grand Prix delivered a wire-to-wire thriller at the Silver Oak Jumper Tournament, where a tall, technical track and a punishing time allowed forced riders into tough choices all afternoon. With 33 starters facing big scope questions, tight rollbacks, and unforgiving clock pressure, the equation was simple: sacrifice time to jump clear—or push the gas and risk a rail. Only five found the answer, advancing to a jump-off that was as tactical as it was fast.

The jump-off picked up right where Round 1 left off—quick turns, forward lines, no room for error. Isabelle Ehman (USA) and Darra du Soleil laid down a scorching pace but paid for the risk with a rail at speed. Francisco Goyoaga Mollet (ESP) and Grisby de Poilley followed suit: fast enough to threaten, a fence down kept them off the top step. In the end, composure and execution won the day as Charlotte Jacobs (USA) piloted Instrumental to a flawless, efficient double clear, threading the needle between precision and pace to take the Grand Prix.

“This was big-time sport—serious height, real questions, and a time allowed that demanded conviction,” said Tournament Chairman Jeff Papows. “Charlotte rode with ice in her veins when it mattered most. Our thanks to Agero, the Morrissey Group, and Lefty—whose tireless work and pride in the ring make moments like this possible.”

Babington Benefit Classic Delivers Emotional, Last-to-Go Thriller in Support of the Kevin Babington Foundation

The Babington Benefit Classic, presented by Rood & Riddle, produced a heart-pounding finish and an outpouring of support for the Kevin Babington Foundation as riders rallied for a cause that unites the sport. Twenty-six combinations came forward, and an exceptional 19 riders jumped clear in Round 1 to set up a jump-off loaded with speed, precision, and drama.

From the early going, Kristen Vanderveen threw down a target that looked untouchable—blistering pace and ice-cold execution. But the script flipped at the very end. Last to go, her sister-in-law Kelli Cruciotti-Vanderveen walked through the in-gate on Shamonix SF, a 7-year-old mare with a big engine and a bigger heart. What followed was a turn-and-burn masterclass: tight rollback turns, a bold gallop down the final line, and a wire-to-wire dash that stopped the clock by 0.569 seconds—just over half a second—to seal a memorable victory for the Foundation’s signature class.

“Today showcased the best of our community—elite sport, sportsmanship, and genuine purpose,” said Tournament Chairman Jeff Papows. “With Rood & Riddle’s support and every rider leaning in for the Kevin Babington Foundation, the Babington Benefit Classic delivered a finish we’ll be talking about all year.”

GGT-Footing CSI 3* Welcome Grand Prix Opens with Photo-Finish Thriller at the Silver Oak Jumper Tournament

Traverse City, MI – Sept. 6, 2025

The Silver Oak Jumper Tournament, benefitting the Kevin Babington Foundation, delivered ESPN-level drama on opening day as the GGT-Footing CSI 3* Welcome Grand Prix came down to the very last horse. Hunter HOLLOWAY (USA) and PEPITA CON SPITA snatched victory by less than six-hundredths of a second over Callie SCHOTT (USA) with URICAS V/D KATTEVENNEN, while Paige MATTHIES (USA) and CALLMEBACK PONTONS sealed third to complete a U.S. sweep of the podium.

The class brought 10 clear riders back for a high-octane jump-off that started quick and unforgiving. Rails and time kept early pairs off a double-clear—no one could stop the clock clean until the third-to-last combination finally posted the mark to beat. That breakthrough came from Schott and Uricas V/D Kattevennen, who threw down a slick, efficient round that looked like the winning ride. But with the arena holding its breath, Holloway—last to go—found another gear, slicing turns and leaving out strides to edge the lead by a margin under 0.06 seconds.

“That was edge-of-your-seat sport,” said Cynthia Keating, representative of GGT Footing, the evening’s presenting sponsor. “You could feel the electricity build as round after round chased the first double clear. To see it decided by just hundredths of a second is exactly why we love this game. We’re thrilled to be part of such a great horse show and proud to support footing that lets riders and horses perform at their best.”
