World Number 2 Flies to Claim the Agero Grand Prix

Kent Farrington and Dolores PS close the Silver Oak Jumper Tournament with a spectacular victory that came down to the final horse.

Some riders come to a Grand Prix ready to win.

Kent Farrington flew in to do it.

On the final day of the 19th Silver Oak Jumper Tournament presented by the Davis McCullough Foundation, the Agero CSI3 Grand Prix* delivered exactly the kind of finale the week deserved: speed, pressure, star power and a championship that remained undecided until the very last horse crossed the timers.

And when it was over, the world No. 2 had reminded everyone why that number sits next to his name.

Sunday began with Traverse City guitarist Jesse Jefferson standing in the International Ring and delivering a soaring rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, setting the stage for one final afternoon of international show jumping.

Then came the horses.

Twenty-seven combinations stepped forward to challenge the first-round course, but clear rounds were hard earned.

Only seven combinations found their way into the jump-off.

And only one rider managed to do it twice.

Kelli Cruciotti-Vanderveen qualified both Windstar and Mochito V/D Mishagen, giving herself two shots at the title.

But sitting among them was Farrington.

And his Sunday had started long before he entered the ring.

Farrington had spent part of the week competing in Traverse City before flying to Toronto for Major League Show Jumping, where he finished second in the CSI5* Grand Prix on Saturday night.

Then he turned around.

Back to Traverse City.

Back in the saddle.

Back to work.

And this time, second place was not to be.

Farrington and Dolores PS attacked the jump-off with the kind of efficiency that makes elite sport look almost unfair.

Forward.

Tight.

Quick across the ground.

No wasted motion.

They crossed the timers in 35.95 seconds.

And then they waited.

The target was set.

Now everybody else had to chase it.

Jacob Pope and Jecibelle took their shot and came flying.

The pair were clean, aggressive and looked every bit capable of stealing the class as they turned for home. They cleared the final fence and stopped the clock in 36.91 seconds.

Fast enough for second.

Not fast enough for Kent.

And then there was one.

The final rider of the Silver Oak Jumper Tournament entered the ring.

Kelli Cruciotti-Vanderveen and Mochito V/D Mishagen.

One horse.

One last chance.

One final run at Farrington.

Cruciotti-Vanderveen picked up a powerful gallop from the opening stride and went after the time. Through the early part of the jump-off, she and Mochito appeared to be matching Farrington stride for stride.

The clock was alive.

So was the crowd.

Everything came down to the final rollback and the race home.

The pair jumped clear and stopped the timers at 37.69 seconds.

Third place.

And just like that, the tournament belonged to Kent Farrington.
