Courage, perseverance and determination are just a few words to describe our hero, the inimitable Kevin Babington.
As many of you know, Kevin recently returned from the Mayo Clinic where he underwent stem cell therapy. The path to Mayo was a long and arduous journey, but along with the support of his remarkable family and close friends, Kevin never wavered. The progress Kevin has made is a testament to his incredible strength of character and we’re all so excited to watch and assist Kevin as he continues to improve.
The Board of Directors of the Kevin Babington Foundation (John Brennan Maarten Huygens Missy Clark Shane Sweetnam Darragh Kerins Colm Mcguckian and Jack Morgan) would like to extend a very heartfelt thanks to all of the many people who’ve stepped up to the plate to donate to the KBF. Kevin still has a long road to recovery ahead of him, and the KBF will continue to need financial support so that Kevin can stay on his path to recovery.
The KBF officially applied for its own 501(c)3 designation in February of this year. While the foundation is under review by the IRS, contributions made to it are tax deductible. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.
We’d like to close by saying thank you to Kevin for showing us how to deal with adversity. Your strength of character is unparalleled. Your courage and resiliency is truly remarkable. To say you’ve been an inspiration to so many of us is an understatement. You’re going to do this Kevin! Keep fighting!
To make a tax-deductible donation to the foundation easily online, please visit our newly launched website at www.kevinbabingtonfoundation.org and click the “Donate Here” button.
To all of our past, present and future donors, the Board of Directors at the KBF thanks you from the bottom of our hearts for your generous support! 🍀 ... See MoreSee Less

A Safer Way to Do What You Love
*****Please note we have added more information, see below*******
*The Kevin Babington Foundation’s goal with this article is to highlight the different cutting edge airbag safety bags that are available in the equestrian market. We are not endorsing any specific brand. We are sharing resources as we gather data in an attempt to provide information that can be utilized at each person’s discretion. *
The Kevin Babington Foundation has been conducting research on safety measures to increase the level of assurance within the sport of equestrian. Currently, there are many safety vests in the equestrian market. Throughout the research, three airbag safety vests have stuck out as the safest and most effective in mitigating injuries from a fall.
The first is the Freejump Airbag (pictured). Made in France, every vest is tested separately and can be worn by itself or under a Freejump Airbag Technology- Compatible Jacket. This airbag is certified by the CRITT Sport Loisirs laboratory in Europe, giving it a CE certification. On the equestrian market, the Freejump Airbag can be purchased through a U.S. online named TackNRider.
Helite Airbag Technology Expert is the manufacturer for the Freejump Airbag. Helite also creates a show jacket compatible with the airbag. The trigger that sets off the bag is mechanical in order to prevent the airbag from deploying untimely. This airbag provides coverage from head to tailbone. Helite airbags come with a warranty and a CE certification. These vests are already being used in other sports such as motocross and skiing. Hansen Distribution offers Helite airbags online or in their many stores located around the United States and the world.
The second is the Horse Pilot Airbag Jacket. Partnered with FEI, this European brand is sold by U.S. online retailers such as EQUIS Boutique. This airbag is also CE EU certified. With the help of In & Motion, cutting edge innovation provided a gas trigger for the vests to inflate. Horse Pilot has also innovated with styling; the vests can be worn as part of a show jacket for discrete safety or on its own for practice. Additional information about how to use the vest can be found in the links provided below.
The third is the Hit-Air Safety Vest. This brand was developed and tested in the sport of motocross and continued on into the equestrian market. Crash tested, the vest inflates when the lanyard clip is released as the rider falls. After inflation, a canister is used to remove the CO2 in order to reset the airbag. A new canister is needed every time for deflation. This was the first airbag vest made and has been through 20 years of testing in order to ensure its quality and effectiveness. Neck tests can be viewed in the links below.
Due to the risk involved in our sport, we are encouraging all riders to add airbag safety vests to their equestrian wardrobes in order to continue competing in the sport that they love in the safest way possible.

I started to wear the Helite FreeJump after a really bad fall which resulted in a TBI. I started riding again after a 6 month hiatus and the vest gave me added confidence as well as providing safety. After almost a year since my initial accident, I fell the other day. The vest deployed and I was fine. I wish I had been wearing it the first time I fell. I really believe it would have helped to relieve the severity of my injury. I will never ride again without one.
Thank you, can you tell us which one is certified to the body protector standard that ensures protection to the rider’s torso, EN 13158 or the airvest specification, SATRA M38?
God this will make me look like a horrible person, but we who have evented and have eventing friends and scientists have seen that the air vests DO NOT 100% increase the safety in a fall. Some vests and falls have actually been found to have made the injury worse. Likewise I believe if memory serves that some of this was found to be similarly true when the vests were tested for use by motorcycle riders, their original intended market. Here I will defer to my friend Reed Ayers who is an actual scientist and can FAR better explain what I am mentioning here. Overall in eventing we are pushing for, but so far not getting, more studies on the effect of vests in falls. This link has more links within to one air vest study that was done. www.chronofhorse.com/forum/forum/discussion-forums/eventing/10408885-finally-an-air-vest-study-ai...
Do any protect your neck?
I wear the point two airvest every time I get on, I love it!
Thank you for researching this and providing links. This is really helpful!
FANTASTIC!!! This should be mandatory!!!
I Event/Compete in FL. I’ve never heard anything but positive words regarding an air vest, from the top professionals to us amateurs! I have first-hand experience on how it saved me this pass May. I had a terrible fall, schooling cross-country, and that air vest saved me, it was the only reason why I was able to get up and walk away on my own! I had absolutely zero whiplash, no body aches, just a broken shoulder, but that’s because I landed on that arm when it was extended. 🤦🏻♀️😢 The best investment we’ve ever made! Stay safe everyone. 🙏🏻
Thank you!! these are amazing... i just wish they were more affordable. I have been contemplating a vest for 10 years.. every since I broke my back and now have hardware from T11 to L3.. been researching...
What happens if it doesn’t release? Is there a chance you would be attached to the horse if it malfunctions?

Thank you !

Anita. Check this out
Relevant study.... "He added that riders wearing an air jacket had 1.7 times increased odds of sustaining a serious or fatal injury in a fall compared to riders not wearing an air jacket." www.horsetalk.co.nz/2019/06/30/air-vests-body-protectors-eventing-falls/
Dear lord the ignorance of this post! What data have the manufactures or have you, Kevin Babington, developed to PROVE airvests are safer. The FEI data shows that airvests are associated with greater injury or death at ALL FEI levels. This post, at best, is misleading to the public and is based on marketing and sponsors.

Great work folks
Missy Clark had a great time giving Olivia Sweetnam a lesson today on her pony, On Your Mark. Olivia won the lesson in an auction event held at the National Horse Show last November to benefit Kevin Babington. All proceeds were donated to the KBF.
“I was so impressed with Olivia today, said Missy. She has such a natural feel and her position is excellent! She was clearly born to ride considering her dad is Irish showjumper, Shane Sweetnam!”
Olivia is trained by her mom, Ally Sweetnam and by Danny Arendt
out of Sweet Oak Farm.
All of us at the KBF hope everyone stays healthy during these unsettling times. We will continue to keep everyone updated on Kevin and his progress as things unfold.
And as always, we can’t thank everyone enough who have generously donated to the KBF. We are all so grateful for the continued support for Kevin by so many in our close knit community.

Occasionally there are heroes who cross our paths in life. Personally I have a select few, one of which is none other than
Kevin Babington himself... and another is Freddie Mercury. I’ve somewhat deluged Kevin with a lot of Freddie videos and songs over the past few months.
The song Kevin is listening to in tonight’s video is A Winter’s Tale. The other night I sent this song to Kevin as I wasn’t sure if he was familiar with it.
Previously I hadn’t really listened to A Winter’s Tale much but since John’s and my return from Montreux I’ve become a huge fan of it...just like I’m a huge fan of Kevin’s!
The backstory to A Winter’s Tale illustrates the incredible strength of character Freddie Mercury possessed. He wrote and recorded this song in beautiful Montreux when he was gravely ill in 1991.
Kevin too possesses the most incredible strength of character I’ve ever personally witnessed.
There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about Kevin and marvel at his remarkable tenacity, all coupled with the most determined and positive outlook. Kevin is such a warrior, truly unparalleled. As he continues his fight to recover I hope all of his friends and followers will continue to be here for Kevin and his family.
He will never give up and neither should we.
And to all who have generously contributed to the KBF, thank you! All of your support is tremendously appreciated!
Thank you Kevin for inspiring us, motivating us and for showing us what real courage looks like. You’re one in a million. 💚🧡

The Kevin Babington Foundation Facebook page has been set up to update people on Kevin and his progress, share information regarding fund raising and to keep everyone current on what is needed for Kevin as he continues on his journey towards rehabilitation.
As many of you know Kevin’s rehabilitation is going to be a long process. The KBF has been created to assist in generating funds so the large task of providing the best possible care for Kevin is viable.
All of us at the KBF wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to the many people who have already donated. With the contributions received we were able to recently purchase a van for Kevin so he can easily be transported to and from physical therapy once he is released from Kessler and is down in Florida. Currently the date for Kevin’s arrival in Wellington is on or around December 5th.
If anyone has any questions please send your inquiries here via private message or you can send an email to
if you need bank details for donations.
Additionally the KBF hopes to be a platform where riders can access resources to obtain information on innovative safety equipment to aid in the prevention of catastrophic injury. Arguably our sport is behind the 8 ball in this area, and it’s time we look more closely at the many cutting edged options in safety vests and riding coats which are readily available.
Many thanks for your continued support for Kevin. He and his family, and all of us at the KBF are so incredibly grateful for your interest and generosity.
We hope we can continue to count on all of you as Kevin faces his brave battle to recover.
